Christ Church Library, Oxford, possesses thirteen codices of medieval and early modern Hebrew manuscripts six secular texts – original works by Jewish scholars or Hebrew translations of Christian or Arabic works, many themselves versions of, or commentaries on, classical writings – and seven containing specifically Jewish works Rabbinics, Esoteric Kabbalah and Hekhalot Texts, Torah Homilies, the Khazar Correspondence and a Morality Play. The collection is currently being digitised and made available on the Library website. The Introductory Studies presented here are extensively illustrated and include full colour photographs of images from the codices themselves, as well as b/w images of the manuscripts’ watermarks. The Library’s Donors Book records gifts of Hebrew books and manuscripts from John Fell, Dean of Christ Church, at various times between 1660 and 1686. Fell was also the founder of the Oxford University Press and most probably acquired these Hebrew manuscripts from the Dutch brokers, booksellers and printers with whom he had dealings as part of his ambitious plans for the new University Press. These manuscripts include, inter alia The oldest manuscript version (16th century) of the Khazar correspondence containing the full texts of both Hasdai ibn Shaprut’s letter and the King’s reply. Two previously unknown works by Joseph Solomon Delmedigo the 17th century polymath and one-time pupil of Galileo a Responsum regarding the eligibility of a Ger (proselyte) to hold a position of coercive authority in the Amsterdam Jewish community and a polemic about the unwelcoming treatment of this Ger in particular and often of Gerim in general. A 15th century manuscript of Moshe ibn Tibbon’s Hebrew Translation of Al Hassar’s 12th century arithmetical treatise, Kitāb al Bayān, in which he first introduced the ‘fraction bar’ (vinculum) to separate the numerator and denominator in a fraction. A 15th century Hebrew Morality play – “Speech is Dumb” – about the evils articulated by speech and how to deal with them, whose protagonists include a King, his Wise Men, a Yemenite Scholar, Speech itself and Justice. An early 17th century tooled leather bound codex containing a mélange of Kabbalistic and Maimonidean texts. The Kabbalistic texts comprise drafts of an exposition on Sefer Yetzirah composed by Shlomo ben Shimon Turiel in Safed c.1570 that incorporate various Kabbalistic numerical arrays and pictorial depictions. The principle Maimonidean text is a version of the queries put to Maimonides by the Wise Men of Lunel and his replies to them. These texts are interspersed by orange coloured daubings, sketches and marginalia, as well as phonetically spelled Hebrew phrases perhaps the work of a 17th century follower of Christian Kabbalah.
