From the National Book Award-winning author of the now-classic Arctic Dreams, a vivid, poetic, capacious work that recollects the travels around the world and the encounters--human, animal, and natural--that have shaped an extraordinary life.

Taking us nearly from pole to pole--from modern megacities to some of the most remote regions on the earth--and across decades of lived experience, Barry Lopez, hailed by the Los Angeles Times Book Review as "one of our finest writers," gives us his most far-ranging yet personal work to date, in a book that moves indelibly, immersively, through his travels to six regions of the world from Western Oregon to the High Arctic; from the Galápagos to the Kenyan desert; from Botany Bay in Australia to finally, unforgettably, the ice shelves of Antarctica.
As he takes us on these myriad travels, Lopez also probes the long history of humanity's quests and explorations, including the prehistoric peoples who trekked across Skraeling Island in northern Canada, the colonialists who plundered Central Africa, an enlightenment-era Englishman who sailed the Pacific, a Native American emissary who found his way into isolationist Japan, and today's ecotourists in the tropics. Throughout his journeys--to some of the hottest, coldest, and most desolate places on the globe--and via friendships he forges along the way with scientists, archaeologists, artists and local residents, Lopez searches for meaning and purpose in a broken world.
Horizon is a revelatory, epic work that voices concern and frustration along with humanity and hope--a book that makes you see the world differently, and that is the crowning achievement by one of America's great thinkers and most humane voices.

"I loved “Of Wolves and Men”, “Arctic Dreams”, “Crow and Weasel”, and “Homeground”. And there is some very beautifully descriptive and thoughtful writing in this book. But in this age of accelerating climate change which Lopez acknowledges, we can no longer afford the luxury of all the travel he writes about. I worry that it will encourage too many others to follow his lead. The latest IPCC report says we have to reduce our climate change gas output 45% in the next 10 years. An almost impossible task, especially so if the rate of airline travel keeps growing at its current rate. I prefer books more grounded in one particular area that are descriptive and thoughtful about those areas. As Gary Snyder said “The most radical thing you can do is to stay home.” And learn the details there, dig into the work, build community, and praise the beauty there."

Horizon eBook Barry Lopez Reviews

  • Fantastic narratives that may well surpass the work of "Arctic Dreams." 30 years in the making. Written in the beautiful style Lopez's readers have come to know and admire since the 1970s. Read it, and then give copies to your loved ones and best friends.
  • This book strikes me as lazy, which may be unfair on my part. The author re visits many locations he has written about in the past. You need to be a very serious Barry Lopez can to enjoy this book. It is somewhere between an autobiography and a greatest hits collecton.
  • A defining work of our beloved mature and brilliant observer. Precise, penetrating and contemplative.
More reflective and accepting yet piercing and articulate! A thoughtful and provocative work of distilled wisdom.
  • I loved “Of Wolves and Men”, “Arctic Dreams”, “Crow and Weasel”, and “Homeground”. As Gary Snyder said “The most radical thing you can do is to stay home.” And learn the details there, dig into the work, build community, and praise the beauty there.
  • This is a tremendous book. Lopez in a pensive, troubled, self-critical, or perhaps better phrased, a self-questioning mood. What is it to travel? What does the traveller learn, take away, and importantly what does he or she take along with them? I can't recall a book in recent years that I've been this immersed in.
  • Fluffy travel memoir at best.

A goblin with no body and a monster with no face.
A resourceful samurai and a faithful daughter.
A spirit of the moon and a dragon king.

This collection of 15 traditional Japanese folktales transports readers to a time of adventure and enchantment. Drawn from the works of folklorists Lafcadio Hearn and Yei Theodora Ozaki, these tales are by turns terrifying, exhilarating, and poetic. Each story is brought to life with a striking illustration by contemporary Japanese artist Kotaro Chiba, and this special gift edition features an embossed, textured case with metallic gold ink, and a satin ribbon page marker. It will delight fans of fairytales and ghost stories, and captivate those interested in Japan's rich history and culture.

"I’ve had the privilege of reading many, many folktale collections, but none quite as unique as this one. I love anything oriental and have since I was a teen, but am more familiar with the art world than the literary one. I became mesmerized with these traditional stories, each one bringing some aspect of ancient Japanese culture and lore to life for me. This collection is based on two 20th century collections by Lafeadio Hearn and Yei Theodora Ozaki. One of the things I loved the most about the tales within this book is the fact that they read almost as if I were listening at the feet of a master storyteller. They are that good!

There were a wide variety of themes in these folktales, as expected. There were those who were rewarded with riches beyond compare for leading a good life and those who were punished mightily for their evil deeds. There were tricksters and those that explained the origin of why creatures like jelly fish are what they are. My favorite, of course was the ghost and monster section. None were terribly frightening, but all were ultra-cool and fun. Reading them will bring to mind those days around a campfire while we all waited for a good scare that would keep us awake half the night.

This is a collection that will be of interest a wide variety of people from historians to those interested in folktales. I was mesmerized by these tales and equally delighted in Kotaro Chiba’s marvelous artwork. The book isn’t set up in chronological order, but I did read it cover to cover. One lovely addition was the sewn in silk bookmark which made its way from the first pages to the last. In the back of the book is a note on the sources and a list of the sources themselves. These timeless tales have obviously been carefully chosen. This would be a perfect addition to a library or classroom collection of fairy and folktales.

  • A fantastic arrangement of stories that hinge upon supernatural elements. Each tale is at once engrossing, profound, and, like many myths and fables, worthy of discussion. There's humor to also be found in a story or two, and several function as potent ghost stories.

Some of the legends might feel familiar I noticed that the Tales from the Darkside movie pulled from the Yuki-Onna story for one of its vignettes, for instance. Kind of an obscure link, but, hey, each has their own.

Each tale is prefaced by a beautiful illustration to kind of give you an idea of what lies ahead. It's additionally separated into categories Journeys, Ghosts and Monsters, and Justice. Finally, if you're still clamoring for more, the book directs you to further readings.

I grew up loving collections such as this one, and I'd fully recommend handing this over to a young person who's into such material. It stokes the imagination and, as is its intention, plays as an effective assistant in developing and teaching about other cultures.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the advance read.
  • Short, simple translations of Japanese folk tales, each accompanied by a lovely illustration. While easy to read and interesting, I would've liked a bit more here - more detail in the stories, more artwork, more information on the history of the tales. Still, it was a nice introduction and enjoyable to read.
  • Beautiful renditions of classic Japanese folktales with excellent art work is found in this offering. These are very well written and enjoyable.

Vitalik Buterin Seven Deadly Crypto Sins Audible Audio Edition Jefferson Nunn Liam Kelly Jeffrey Dunston Books Reviews

  • An interesting read for anyone, and required reading for everyone who really wants to understand cryptocurrencies. In this collection of essays, Mr. Nunn has done a masterful job of exploring Buterin’s seven “deadly crypto sins,” which deal with 51% attacks, large-scale applications, account security, execution latency, proof of work, proof of stake, and autonomous governance. Blockchain, hard forks, and artificial intelligence with regard to cryptocurrencies are also discussed. The reader will find it reassuring that crypto pioneers are looking towards the future of cryptocurrencies by identifying issues today. Nunn concludes with his arguments as to why cryptocurrencies are the future of money with a quote from Star Trek TNG “We’ve eliminated hunger, want, the need for possessions. We’ve grown out of our infancy.”
  • I am a rookie in this area of Crypto, and this book is helping me to "move into today". I rarely use cash. I do direct deposit for my bill, online deposit of check received, and I charge as often as I can. Bottom line is I rarely see or hold hard cash in my hands. I need to learn more and Mr Nunn's book is my gateway to today. I had a tough time getting rid of punch cards, then tape, flopy disks, CD/DVD ... so why not take the next step to crypto currency.

I like Mr Nunn's quote from Star Trek TNG “We’ve eliminated hunger, want, the need for possessions. We’ve grown out of our infancy.” Amen for me.

Becoming Myself A Psychiatrist Memoir Irvin D Yalom 9781541698994 Books Reviews

  • This Memoir was a "Soulful Finale" as Dr. Yalom's final book. I tried to make it last by processing a few chapters at a time. Love the format of short chapters beginning in his childhood and taking us through many memories of his life, both personal and professional.
Within the Memoir, Dr. Yalom offers revealing insight into his conceptualization of his many books and the beautiful retreats where he wrote in solitude. I will surely re-read them with that in mind. His unique personal commentary entwined in many of his books continues in this one. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Rollo May. I find Dr. Yalom's thoughtful honesty so refreshing in our current world where truth and ethics seem to be fading. I will continue to share his work with my students to keep the "rippling" flowing.
As we all experience Dr. Yalom's "final book", may we stand and applaud his wisdom and our connections, requesting an ENCORE! (from his ongoing "Ideas for writing" file). I'd like to hear more stories about living an exemplary life (in spite of) and the many types of love along the way from someone who does it so well. With deep appreciation.
  • The title of this remarkable memoir could well have been "Revealing Myself." Dr. Yalom does just that with refreshing candor throughout this engrossing story of his life.
The story of his relationship with, and feelings for, his parents are particularly telling. His literary and intellectual interests were not ones shared by his immigrant mother and father. Indeed, these interests drew him away from them. But his parents still were always there to help him advance his career by financing his education, giving him the down payment for the purchase of his current home, and loving him in their own way. Given the historically difficult relationship the author had with his parents, and his mother in particular, it is noteworthy that the author dedicates the book to their memory, as well as to the memory of his sister, about whom we learn little in the book. To me, it shows that Dr. Yalom has come to understand and appreciate that his parents were always supportive of him.
I most admired the author's willingness to face the fear of death with his patients, and with himself. My experience is that this is a subject generally avoided by many psychiatrists. There seems indeed to be a conspiracy of silence between most therapists and their patients on this critical subject. But not with Yalom! He faces the issue of death head on, and has done so successfully for decades.
I am an artist who paints objects not visible to the naked eye, such as those things one sees in a drop of pond water through a microscope. Likewise, Yalom, with his own intellectual microscope, sees so much of the internal life of a patient that others, including the patient himself/herself, simply does not see. As such, I see Dr. Yalom as an artist, but simply operating in a different realm from me.
  • I'm so impressed with and cannot stop talking about the author’s latest work, which has opened up new vistas for me both in my work as a therapist and as a person. Not taking into consideration his unique writing ability, his stellar educational credentials and his high level of professional experience, I see some parallels in our two lives. Although I had wanted to go to med school and I had wanted to become a writer, after many years of struggle in various sales and marketing endeavors, I finally and belatedly got into the psychotherapy field in the year 2001, when I became 60. I have been a practicing clinician since that time. This is an amazing book and has provided me with tremendous insight and fleshed out my place on the Great Mandalla of therapy.
  • I loved and thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Yalom is very honest, not holding back, not hiding, ego-free and without inhibition. Other members of our book club had already read his other books and thought this one was not as good. But not having read his earlier books, I loved this one and finished it very quickly. We later read one of his other books (when Nieche Wept) which is brilliant. I now know what they meant. But you cannot compare a novel to a memoir. Unfair comparison. Highly recommend this and his other books.
  • This is a wonderful book. For those who have been touched or influenced by Yalom's work, this is a must read. In this memoir, Yalom gives his audience an intimate and engaging window into the way he thinks, feels, and lives his life. All psychotherapists should be reading Yalom and learning from his intelligence, genuineness, courageousness, and compassion for those whose lives he touches. This is true not only as a psychotherapist, but also as a man devoted to family, learning, and balance. I have read every book he has written, and this memoir makes them all the more vivid, revealing, and understandable. I highly recommend this book to those who desire to become closer to Yalom, the man.

Age of Heroes A Superhero Adventure The Pantheon Saga Book 1 eBook CC Ekeke Reviews

  • What if a catastrophic event also made superhumans of a few people? Some would be good/altruistic, and some would be bad/evil. Crime fighting would take on a whole new dimension. Mr. Ekeke writes an excellent speculative story about how relationships and the world would change. Greyson must hide his talents while fighting both crime and government control, but he has help from a government-sanctioned superhero. What a great series!
  • It's a solid start, the characters aren't terrible (although many are two dimensional cutouts straight from central casting - I mean a sports jock bully in a high school? Let's see the author try something new in a world with superpowers.)

The problem is that the author first wants to follow 3 different characters. A high school boy from this universe's version of Metropolis. A reporter working in the same city. and finally a secret super from the Midwest who fears his own ability (for good reasons).

So we end up jumping around depending on who's chapter it is. Which is never a good thing for a fairly new author. Stick to one character and ride them to the finish of the tale.

Worse, the reporter is more of an observer of what feels like a side plot. Then the high school boy who probably should have been the focus gets forgotten unless there is a need to have one character take the "I don't write Mary Sue characters trash dive". I mean he's supposed to have great and wondrous powers, but he rarely uses them and just about everyone at the school treats him like dirt. (which was totally cliche, at one point the character himself almost notes how cliche that is.)

The third plot thread was another with potential, but it seemed to have nothing to do with the other 2 and wasn't even in the same city.

I know the author is working on book 2 and promises to bring all this together. Maybe after that comes out I'd be inclined to raise my star count (not likely), but that requires that I decide to risk another romp through this less than impressive world.

Good to a point, but very lacking due to the 3 divergent plots. Honestly, this is for those that love the genre.
  • Ok, so to start, this was an excellent read; thoroughly enjoyed it. As other reviewers have indicated, the opening is a bit slow, but this is well worth the it as this is the foundation and actual draw into the world and characters the author is introducing. This is a quietly amazing take on super heroes, which in many ways was/is a nice redirect from what many may find to be the typical super hero "coming of age" angst and whine plot with accompanying fillers. The best compliment I can give is that this book feels like a paperback; the characters, the immersing story, descriptive writing style, all give a throwback feel to paperback...as opposed to some of the high gloss writing one may find in some of today's digital offerings. I highly encourage others to try this author's work, as I look forward to part 2 in this series. I am now even intrigued to perhaps visit the Starbrigade series.... Enjoy!
  • Good story with relatable characters. I am very much looking forward to part two.

I like that much of the world building is done though the characters experiences (instead of through boring exposition). I also like the various viewpoints... Gives a nice look at a series of events without overwhelming your ability to remember who is who.

I do want to know more about some of the bad guys. Some of the fights felt very 'hero defeats subvillain 3', but that is a minor quibble.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves superhero stories.
  • This is comic book heroes in novel form and I love it. This harkens back to me reading comic books and all the different superheroes and how they tried to lead normal lives along with their superhero lives and it's a murder mystery all rolled into one. This is an interesting take on superheroes. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it to people who liked the show heroes will love this book. More Please!
  • I enjoyed the author's writing in the first of the series. It kept my attention and I enjoyed the story itself. The characters were well done. However, the plot didn't quite work for me, something seemed to be missing. Also, there were too many portions describing the attractiveness of various characters, what I would expect in a teen novel. Not terrible but for me quite distracting.
  • Little slow at the beginning which is regular with back story. Amped up pretty nicely throughout. I'm not a fan of the multiple story lines in one book but it is well written and works ok
  • Good teen novel. I’m not a teen.

The Art of Place Architecture and Interiors Lee Ledbetter Mayer Rus John H Stubbs 9780847862115 Books Reviews

  • I looked at every page upon the arrival of this gorgeous book, but I kept returning to it, intrigued by the depth with which each project is described, like stores in an anthology. The photography is superb, the layout elegant, and some of the projects are even accompanied by floor plans - a particular treat. But what speaks loudest is hinted at by the book's title The Art of Place, as this is place-making at its best. I will treasure this one for years and stockpile it for holiday gifting.
  • I was looking forward to the release of this book. Lee Ledbetter's melding of architecture and design is both thought provoking and beautiful. The stunning photographs and Mayer Rus's insightful text make this book not only gorgeous to look at, but also an interesting read. Mr. Ledbetter seamlessly combines the tradition and elegance of southern architecture with modern surprises. His attention to the art collections within the homes he designs have given me the inspiration to reimagine the use of art within my own home. A beautiful book.
  • I have not read through this book yet. However, I could not help but to look at the beautiful rooms throughout it. You will not be disappointed, go for it and see what I mean.
  • Lee Ledbetter has exquisite taste. Every photo reflects his amazing talent.
    Loving the book!
