Liferider Heart Body Soul and Life Beyond the Ocean Laird Hamilton Julian Borra 9781635652901 Books Reviews
- I really wanted to like this book having just seen a film on Hamilton - Catch Every Wave - which was very interesting.
This book, however, was not.
Its a bunch of positive-thinking seminar babble with some, but not enough, information about sports physiology and training.
The worst part is the odd spiritual stuff he tries to throw in. Unlike the other well-known surfer named Hamilton, Laird seems to want to create his own religious belief system, although it is not cleat what that is. - Very much enjoyed this perspective with the attempts to try and understand a very complex person. I have been an admirer of Lairds for sometime and I am a very strong believer in the product line he has created.
- As a longtime fan of Laird's extraordinary accomplishments, this book was eagerly anticipated, and the early discussion about dangers along the North Shore was riveting. The overall takeaway experience was a bummer, though, because the book's editing was horrible. It was like someone followed Laird around with a tape recorder for a while, then wrote "chapters" by grouping together random quotes on repeated themes. The resulting text is choppy & uneven, and reading more than a page or two at a time is generally a no-go. Laird's very intriguing, even fascinating at times, but this book isn't either of those things.
- I'm in a bad place in my life, and this book is really helping to keep up my spirits. Thank-you Laird!!
- Poorly written, disjointed and jumbled. I have read over 2,000 books and this is a true disappointment. From sentence structure to topic sentences, it was a chore to wade through. The concepts are fine; the execution sloppy.
- This is Laird in his own words. We've read plenty about him, and seen 100's of interviews, but this raw and unvarnished book is an excellent read. In fact it feels more like a conversation with him. Highly recommended, and I love Gabby's input and support throughout.
- Not many books address "the crisis of identity in many of us," and the fact that "we are losing our grip on what it is to be human." Liferider is a compilation of Laird's philosophy about connectedness and mindfulness that offers a new perspective on riding the wave we call life. While we can all learn from Laird's courage dropping in on monster waves, it is the connectedness and Aloha spirit he has divined from waters that is most affecting.
