The first publication in English of the ultimate monograph on painter Lon Spilliaert. Lon Spilliaert (18811946) was one of the most important Flemish Symbolist painters. Although he was embedded in the Symbolist tradition, he was also drawn to the avant-garde. He was, in fact, an einzelgnger, or loner, balancing on the fault line between two centuries, a transitional figure between Symbolism and Surrealism. Spilliaert, like James Ensor, was born and raised in Ostend. And like Ensor, he was also driven by ridicule and irony, non-conformism and the urge to look at the world from a different perspective. He created his own spiritual imagery, experimented with pastel and gouache, and played with purified areas of colour and graceful lines. The sea under a cool moon, lonely figures with a vacant gaze, desolate beaches, empty rooms and stylised silhouettes in backlight Spilliaert was always able to evoke an atmosphere of mystery, magic and alienation in abstract lines and colours. This revised, English-language version of the ultimate Spilliaert book will be published to coincide with the major Spilliaert exhibition at the Royal Academy in London this autumn.

Japan’s U.S.–imposed postwar constitution renounced the use of offensive military force, but, as Sheila Smith shows, a nuclear North Korea and an increasingly assertive China have the Japanese rethinking that commitment, and their reliance on United States security.

Japan has one of Asia’s most technologically advanced militaries and yet struggles to use its hard power as an instrument of national policy. The horrors of World War II continue to haunt policymakers in Tokyo, while China and South Korea remain wary of any military ambitions Japan may entertain. Yet a fundamental shift in East Asian geopolitics has forced Japan to rethink the commitment to pacifism it made during the U.S. occupation. It has increasingly flexed its muscles―deploying troops under UN auspices, participating in coercive sanctions, augmenting surveillance capabilities, and raising defense budgets.

Article Nine of Japan’s constitution, drafted by U.S. authorities in 1946, claims that the Japanese people “forever renounce the use of force as a means of settling international disputes.” When Prime Minister Shinzo Abe broke this taboo by advocating revision of Article Nine, public outcry was surprisingly muted. The military, once feared as a security liability, now appears to be an indispensable asset, called upon with increasing frequency and given a seat at the policymaking table.

In Japan Rearmed Sheila Smith argues that Japan is not only responding to increasing threats from North Korean missiles and Chinese maritime activities but also reevaluating its dependence on the United States. No longer convinced that they can rely on Americans to defend Japan, Tokyo’s political leaders are now confronting the possibility that they may need to prepare the nation’s military for war.

A Lil' Libros Bilingual Counting Book

Introduce your little one to the life of one of Mexico's most iconic painters, Frida Kahlo, while teaching them their numbers, 1 to 10, in English and Spanish. Count una casa azul (one blue house), tres flores (three flowers), and cinco retratos (five portraits).

Unable to find bilingual first concept books she could enjoy reading to her baby, Patty Rodriguez came up with the idea behind Lil' Libros.

Patty and her work have been featured in the Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, CNN Latino, Latina Magazine, Cosmopolitan, People En Espanol, Cosmo Latina, and American Latino TV, to name a few. She is currently Sr. Producer for On Air With Ryan Seacrest|iHeartMedia, jewelry designer for MALA by Patty Rodriguez, and creator of Manolos And Tacos.

Ariana Stein, a graduate from California State University, Dominguez Hills, has a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. Ariana spent the first eight years of her professional career in the corporate world. Her life changed with the birth of her baby boy. She immediately realized that bilingualism played a very important role in his future, as well as the future of other children.

Counting With Contando Con Frida English and Spanish Edition Patty Rodriguez Ariana Stein Citlali Reyes 9781495126567 Books Reviews

  • I love the idea of starting a new language as early as possible, and being in San Diego - learning spanish is a must! This little book is not only sturdy and well made, but the designs and content are seriously adorable. It's simple enough that a child would easily learn from it, but also detailed enough to be a good lesson in language. Plus - it's a cartoon Frida, I mean come on!!!
  • This unique little book came to me lovingly wrapped in orange tissue paper with a Yogaso Logo sticker and a personally written "Thank you!" from the seller. Love Frida, and will try to pass her story along to my grand daughter. Love this series of informative books with a bit of bio thrown in to make it interesting for children and adults alike. Kudos Yogaso!
  • I bought this as a gift for a two year old. Each page features a number and objects to count (such as "dos flores/two flowers"). The pages are bold, colorful, and exciting. This is a great way to introduce little ones to Frida, art, and another culture/language!
  • So cute! I loved it! My son does too!
  • Buy it! I adore this woman and this is a great introduction to her. The pictures are precious and it spells out her life in small ways.

I gave it to my niece who I hope can one day embody the fearlessness and independence of the woman we call FRIDA!!!
  • My 14mo boy likes it. The quality of paper and print are really nice, I would say better than average for board books. I get to teach them the numbers in either language, count with him and talk to him about other cultural things like the Casa Azul, etc. He pays a lot of attention because the graphics and the colors are very attractive. I also have the Cantinflas one from the same publisher and they're both very nice.
  • This book is so cute! I love the art style, and what a great way to bring Frida into a very little one's world!
  • Our 11 month old loves these books. We bought 3 for Christmas and she flips through them daily. The drawings are great and the contrasting colors are beautiful. Simple words in Spanish and English. I think it’s a great introduction to vocabulary in two languages!

Fueled by a passion for running dogs, Gary Paulsen entered the Iditarod - the 1,180-mile sled-dog race through the Alaskan wilderness - in dangerous ignorance and with a fierce determination. For 17 days, he and his team of dogs endured blinding wind, snowstorms, frostbite, dogfights, moose attacks, sleeplessness, hallucinations - and the relentless push to go on.

Winterdance is the enthralling account of a "stunning wilderness journey of discovery and transformation" (Chicago Tribune), lived and told by "the best author of man-against-nature adventures writing today" (Publishers Weekly).

Winterdance The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod Audible Audio Edition Gary Paulsen Danny Campbell Tantor Audio Books Reviews

  • This might be the funniest book I've ever read; Paulson takes us through his education as a clueless Iditarod racer, describing the mishaps he experiences throughout his training, and during the race. His dry wit as he described mishap after mishap caused me to shake with laughter as I tried to contain myself on the New York City subway; I had to put the book down several times so that I could "regroup" before the next bout of laughter. His saintly wife acts as his "straight man" as she endures his debacles at the hands of his dogs and whatever nature could throw at him.

What also comes across though is the bond he forges with his dogs, especially Cookie, who seems to have a deep understand of Paulson, as well as what is expected of her as he trains; he describes her—and the bond he has with her—with great tenderness and devotion as they come to rely on each other during the course of the book.

Whether you love books about animals, books that make you laugh, books about the Iditarod... I would highly recommend this book. I've read a lot of books, and this is one of the best I've ever read.
  • This is one of the better books I've ever read! The premise is Paulsen preparing for then running the Iditarod, a 1000+ mile dog-sled race across Alaska. His misadventures are hilarious - getting dragged for miles by out-of-control dogs, getting blasted by skunks in the middle of the night, getting his clothing and more shredded by his cantankerous sled-dog "Devil", but the hilarity supplements the larger tale of his growing love of his dogs, and ultimately nature.

It's a pretty quick read with funny anecdotes of events during the Iditarod, but it gives normal people a feeling for just how dedicated and hardy (fool hardy?) mushers are. This is a great book for teens and up.

If you've made it this far, please check the box that this review was helpful. Thanks!
  • Winterdance by Gary Paulsen, the best-selling, award-winning author of young reader books, is a fascinating biography of his first Iditarod. He describes the preparation, the fund raising, the dangers, building a relationship with the dogs, and every possible aspect of the experience. The book is educational, spell-binding, and even shocking. If you've ever wondered about this race and what kind of person is driven to participate in it, this book is for you.
  • This book, a true story about an inexperienced newcomer running the Iditerod for the first time, will make you laugh, make you think, raise goosebumps on your arms, and give you a whole new perspective on dogs. And no, you do not have to be a dog lover to love this book. It has been around a while. Years ago, I recommended it to our book club, many of whom ended up buying more copies for Christmas gifts. My dad liked it so much, he read it to his grandchildren (removing the occasional cuss word). It's an amazing race that happens every year in Alaska that doesn't get much notice. When you read what these racers have to overcome to run this race, you understand that they're a breed apart. I love this book. I don't know anybody who I've recommended it to that didn't love it as well.
  • Don't read this book in public -- because you'll be laughing too hard to be in company. Great fun, great grit. Paulsen is about as crazy as his dogs, but this is compulsively interesting. A book for older teens and adults (nothing nasty in it, but it's nothing to recommend to his younger readers -- let them discover it on their own some day).
  • There is a natural rhythm in Gary Paulsen's writing.... he takes youi from high danger to laughter in no time, at the same time he is making fictional story telling out of real life experiences, and making fiction seem intensely real. I have recommended his writing to two other and they have enjoyed it completely and recommended to still others.
  • This is one of my favorite books of all time. Suitable for adults, young adults and reluctant readers.
It's a great story filled with beautiful descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness. Paulsen's sense of humor makes me smile and laugh out loud at many points throughout the book. I have read this book 5 or 6 times. It's like visiting an old friend every time I read it.
  • This was one of my favorite books as a kid, so I thought I would reread it. It was just as gripping and compelling as it was when I was a kid. I read it in a few hours because I couldn't put It down.

In the ancient and mystical land of Muirwood, Lia has known only a life of servitude. Labeled a “wretched,” an outcast unwanted and unworthy of respect, Lia is forbidden to realize her dream to read or write. All but doomed, her days are spent toiling away as a kitchen slave under the charge of the Aldermaston, the Abbey’s watchful overseer. But when an injured squire named Colvin is abandoned at the kitchen’s doorstep, an opportunity arises. The nefarious Sheriff Almaguer soon starts a manhunt for Colvin, and Lia conspires to hide Colvin and change her fate. In the midst of a land torn by a treacherous war between a ruthless king and a rebel army, Lia finds herself on an ominous journey that will push her to wonder if her own hidden magic is enough to set things right. At once captivating, mysterious, and magic-infused, The Wretched of Muirwood takes the classic fantasy adventure and paints it with a story instantly epic, and yet, all its own.

"The Skinny:
Lia Cook is a wretched, an orphan that does not know who her parents are. Working as a cooks apprentice, she has an unreachable dream: she wants to read.

But young Lia has powers beyond what she should have. She is gifted in touching the Medium (kind of The Force in fantasy land). When a young knight is dropped on her doorstep, she gets pulled into a rebellious, and seemingly suicidal, last stand against an evil King.

The Good:
Jeff Wheeler's writes in a solid manner. No complaints there. This is a fast paced Epic Fantasy with a good plot. If it wasn't for the fact that I feel so much déjà vu with the standard tropes, I would have enjoyed this more. Readers that aren't tired of Epic Fantasy will probably find this as a 4 or 5 star read. The fact that I don't enjoy EF that much and still granted this book 3 stars is an endorsement.

The Bad:
This is packed full of overused EF tropes. I read with the constant thought in the back of my mind of "stop me if you've heard this one before..."

If you're looking for something that approaches the sub-genre in a new light, this isn't it.

The Ugly:
I am not educated enough on The Church of Later Day Saints, but I've read elsewhere that Wheeler packs lots of LDS lore into this. It didn't hit me over the head, but it permeates Wheeler's writing as Catholicism permeates Tolkien's. If religious symbolism isn't your thing, then you might not like this one, but if like me you can remain ignorantly blissful, it won't bother you.

Thoughts:
I'm kinda done with big honking thick novels of rehashed GRRM grim-dark, so this was a bit refreshing. This is pure Epic Fantasy, which doesn't happen much anymore. It's nostalgic of fantasy when David Eddings used to wow readers.

I didn't expect much from this, and didn't find much; however, for what it is, I didn't hate it. The true test of any series is the answer to this question: Would you/will you read the next book?

Yes. I will, but I'm not in a hurry."

The Wretched of Muirwood Legends of Muirwood Book 1 eBook Jeff Wheeler Reviews

  • I very rarely write reviews. I believe that the reader should be free to make up their own mind. In this case I felt I had to, in the very least to help balance the ratings. I do not expect anyone to actually read this review.

I have read all three books. The first book is interesting. The second book starts to get fairly religious and starts using faith to shortcut any sort of problem solving in the the ever increasingly linear plot (deus ex machina). Half way through the third book there is no plot just a conservative Christian explanation of the old testament wrath of God smiting the non-believers, literally deus ex machina.

I was surprised at how many LDS concepts and beliefs could be crammed in three books. Some of which are not supposed to be spoken about openly. These books are ideal for Christian conservatives. Everyone else, you have been warned.
  • The Skinny

Yes. I will, but I'm not in a hurry.
  • I'm a pretty wide reader of fantasy, but I have to demur a little bit from all the rave reviews on this book. I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't say that I liked it. The worldbuilding is pretty good, and the protagonist is likable. The story is pretty standard getting the smaller band of good guys to win against the overwhelming numbers of the bad guys. Fine, acceptable.

What I disliked most about this book, though was the magic system. Without giving too much away, the idea of the magic in this world, called the Medium, is that if you have faith, the Medium will reward you. That is, if you're confident in yourself and what you're doing, you'll succeed. I can understand the parallels that the author is trying to draw behind the Medium and real-world religious faith, but this magic system doesn't make for an interesting story. It robs the characters of initiative. Instead of working hard to find an innovative solution to their problems, the characters just believe in themselves, and the Medium makes them succeed. It's not a terrible story, but because of this big flaw, it's just not engaging.

The Secret Plan for a Lady Liberation A Historical Regency Romance Book edition by Abigail Agar Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • i have read books by this author before and thought that her writing was improving. This book was slow moving and it kept going back over the same situations, namely the sneekly Lord Felton and his escapades. One minute Charlotte was trying to put a stop to the secret engagement to Lord Felton by her parents and the next minute she was coming up with some plot to keep that from happening. I don't believe that a young woman in this time period would have been so bold. It was like the author was trying to adapt a story from this century back to the regency period and it just doesn't seem be believable. I was happy that Lady Charlotte was an intelligent girl in the story but there was so much unnecessary drivel in the story or her plotting to get out of the proposed engagement. Just move on. That's my biggest complaint. Lady Charlotte and Lord Ewan Conrad should have realized that they were in love much earlier in the story. Some of the repetitious goings on on The Season could have been curtailed a bit. I also do not like having to get the "extended epilogue" Who doesn't want to read that. It should be apart of the story. I have noticed that several other authors are going the same things and it really irritates me.
  • OMG! Talk about a rollercoaster ride in the dark. A whirlwind of emotions that run so deep it literally takes your breath away. This bad boy keeps you riveted to this page turning delight all the while holding you on a razors edge and frozen to your seat. I couldn't put this little jewel down had I wanted to. All the drama, betrayal and deceit along with a little intrigue and suspense runs high while the tension spirals. This is one incredible storyline with such a thrilling plot that brings this bad boy roaring to life flawlessly. Twists and turns, ups and downs, along with a few glitches and scrapes that make for one heart pounding experience. All the trials and tribulations, lies, uncertainty and heartache make this one outstanding adventure that you won't want to miss. The characters are complex and believable with such depth and individuality it's easy to relate. The scenes are so graphically detailed and descriptive you have no trouble picturing each scenario as they play off one another in perfect balance. Abigail totally nailed this bad boy 100% on point. Remarkable job Abigail, thanks for sharing this little gem with us.
  • It is an enjoyable entertaining read although it is a little drawn out for my taste. I kept putting it down and coming back to it. If I absolutely love a book, I read it straight through. This book had its share of emotional drama. The heroine, Charlotte is an outspoken young lady whose parents try to rein in. Felton bamboozles his way into Charlotte's parents’ good graces and becomes engaged to her against her will. All so he can inherit her father's noble title and parliamentary seat. Felton is a slimy weasel and was well written to portray the perfect villain. I liked Charlotte's new best friend Lucy. Lucy had a sunny optimistic attitude. She is naive and thanks to Charlotte's brazen attitude it gave her the strength to face what she wanted in life. Our hero, Ewan, was a little slow on the uptake with his response to his feelings for Charlotte. His character was written with the thought of him being a gentleman and a successful businessman. His career choice went against society at large as he was the heir to a dukedom and did not have to work. But I admire the fact that since he was little, he wanted to explore the world and experience the wonders contained therein. He also wanted to build his own fortune much to the dismay of his parents and the ton. He was treated unkindly. Gossip followed him everywhere because he did not conform to the established norms. It was sad that both Charlotte and Ewan both had parents that were emotionally unavailable, not demonstrative or loving. They were strict disciplinarians according to social norms. Both Charlotte and Ewan had the same outlook when it came to living. They would never be satisfied with the status quo and would strive to do things their own way. If you have leisurely time this is a great book to snuggle up with.
  • Charlotte💃💋 dithered too much in the marriage mart, so her parents have arranged a secret betrothal for her to Lord Felton Seymour👺, a wealthy cad who is cruel, uncaring, and only wants her father's title, and his seat in Parliament!

Unfortunately, Felton👺 is a master manipulator, and Charlotte's father has no idea how devious Lord Seymour👺 really is. Dad just sees the Seymour wealth and his own title being passed on to a male heir and a husband for his fiesty, nonconformist daughter.

In the meantime, Charlotte💃💋 meets 25 year old Lord Ewan Conrad🐺🍆🌋, the son of a Duke, who has set himself up In the import export business and loves to travel. He has promised his father to look for a wife. His working at a trade is absolutely scandalous to the ton and The titled! He's another nonconformist!

    These opinions are my own.

The contrast between Charlotte's two suitors could not be more glaring! I loved this story but the characters had some trouble saying what they really meant in some passages where honesty was essential. Too much PC and false politeness.
  • ARC REVIEW This a good read, I enjoyed the instant friendship Between Lydia and Charlotte, though Margaret probably didn't need to be added. I enjoyed the polite animosity between Felton and Ewan without being overly central. It does seem to be a bit long winded but everything is basically relevant to the story, I like that even though they are not present Lord Ewan's parents are explained enough that it didn't leave me going who are these people? Wish the author would put the epilogue in the book rather than a separate document especially as they don't really add much to the story. My biggest critic is proofreading, there was a lot of small spelling/wording errors throughout the story, enough to be noticeable.
